The AWA Project at the Ministerial Water Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean
On May 27th and 28th, 2025, The AWA Project participated in the Ministerial Water Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Lima, Peru. Convened by the Presidency of the Forum of Ministers of Environment with support from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), this high-level summit brought together heads of state, ministers, regional leaders and the private sector to advance collective action on water governance in the region.
AWA joined as a youth delegation, and we underscored a critical message: youth must be active contributors in shaping solutions to the water crisis.
The conversations revealed structural challenges that continue to undermine water justice in the LAC region. Despite the existence of innovative tools, such as financial instruments that allocate investments in environmental and water conservation (blue and green financing), many remain disconnected from local realities. Mobilizing these resources requires deliberate action to share knowledge, bridge sectors, and create space for inclusive dialogue. In Peru and across the region, coordination between government, civil society, academia, and the private sector remains fragmented. At AWA, we believe that lasting change will only come through collaborative approaches that recognize water not only as a resource but as a right.
We are committed to continuing our advocacy and policy engagement to advance fair, sustainable, and inclusive water governance at national, regional, and global levels. Our work is driven by the understanding that youth are not waiting to be invited; we are already building the future we deserve.
